How to Play Extinction Mode in COD Ghosts

The alien Extinction mode is the new horde mode included in COD Ghosts. 100's of copies of COD Ghosts were delivered a week early so we've had a chance to see the new Extinction mode before the 5th November.
Featuring lizard like aliens, the mode is quite different from zombies and bares more resemblance to the previous MW3 horde mode. Players can purchase upgrades and equipment using money acquired through drilling and killing aliens. Each mission has various challenges to help you rake in the cash a little faster e.g. killing aliens with only your pistol.
Unlike zombies, each player has a health bar which is shown at the bottom of the screen. The Medic class can revive players faster than any other, and a player gets downed when their health goes into the red. As you can envisage, it's more granular than zombies where X number of hits from a zombie would normally get you downed.
Each mission contains the alien Hive which must be destroyed by the player to stem the flow of Aliens - it also plays a role in one of the rolling challenges. To destroy the hive, the player must locate and use the Drill.
How to unlock/play Extinction mode
Update: Players have reported that you can also unlock Extinction from multiplayer. Just playing a single match will unlock Extinction from the main menu.
To play Extinction mode you need to complete one mission from the Single Player campaign which is a long winded cinematic ride. Don't worry though, it's likely they'll be an unlock code for Extinction so we'll let you know as soon as it's discovered.
Extinction Mode - Equipment
During the Extinction rounds you can use the D-PAD to purchase any of the associated bonuses.
For example, during the early rounds if you choose the Weapon Specialist class you can purchase the following items using the D-PAD during the game:
UP - refills you ammo (up to 40% of max ammo) - cost: $1250.
DOWN - buy explosives for the entire team. 2 semtex and 1 ammo for launchers - cost: $800.
LEFT - buy a portable minigun turret which is placeable - same as sentry in MW3 horde mode - cost: $1100.
RIGHT - buy the I.M.S, Intelligent Munitions System which takes out aliens with explosives if they come too close - cost: $1250
Extinction Mode Classes - Tank, Weapons Specialist, Medic, Engineer
You get to choose your class before you start the Extinction mode. There are four to choose from including:
- Tank
- Weapons Specialist
- Medic
- Engineer
Each class has its own advantages and disadvantages. The Weapons Specialist is well balanced whilst the Medic is great for reviving downed teammates and sustaining the mission.
What is the Drill for?
One of the key aspects in Extinction Mode is drilling.
You pick up the drill just like you collect a part for one of the buildables in zombies. Once deployed, the drill must be protected so it maintains its health and you keeps drilling down.
The Drill will help you destroy the hive, thus ending the mission.
